As Elsinore completes the Visual Intercept 4.0 upgrade, the IssueNet platform on which it is based is being made available as a beta to Visual Intercept customers. The next beta release due in mid-December will include a new deployment tool named IssueNet Central. IssueNet Central is a web site which uses No Touch deployment technology to allow users to launch the rich client interface from a URL without running an installation package.
In addition to making rich client access as simple as opening a web page, No Touch deployment allows upgrades and updates to be deployed from the same URL. As a result, upgrades and updates are immediately available to everyone with no user interaction required. To allow you to take advantage of this feature in the next beta and subsequent releases, this months Tech Tip describes how IssueNet Central works and how to make it available to your users.
When you install the IssueNet platform, the installer creates a web site named "issuenetcentral" which can be loaded from a URL such as: http://localhost/issuenetcentral. The first time users access IssueNet Central they will be taken to a security configuration page which is a one time operation that will configure a user’s security settings to allow IssueNet to run. To configure security the user is prompted to click on the Download button which downloads and runs a utility which will add entries to the security.config file on the user’s machine allowing IssueNet to run software installed on the IssueNet Central server.
Once the security configuration is complete users are taken to the launch page. Clicking the “Launch IssueNet” button will load the latest version of IssueNet. Users can create a bookmark or short cut directly to the software by creating a URL with the format: http://localhost/issuenetcentral/Assemblies/Elsinore.IssueNet.exe.
When you need to deploy an upgrade or an update to IssueNet simply install the update on the computer running the IssueNet Central site. The next time users launch the software using IssueNet Central they will launch the new version.
By using IssueNet Central you can provide your users the advantages of a rich client with the ease of use, accessibility, and deployment of a browser based application.
