Multi-Site Web Support

Multi-Site Web Support

If you are using Visual Intercept Web, there are some instances where you may need to support more than one Visual Intercept Web site. For example, many organizations use Visual Intercept with multiple databases, e.g., one for software development and another for internal IT support. In this type of scenario you would need a web site for each database.

When setting up multiple web sites the most obvious configuration is one physical directory for each site. Even if the sites are to be identical, each site will need its own configuration files and user profiles. However, maintaining multiple physical directories can be a hassle - particularly when it is time to upgrade and you have common customizations that you need to apply to each site.

Fortunately Visual Intercept Web and Web Relay allow you to run multiple sites with different configuration options and user profiles using a single physical directory. This capability allows you to configure as many sites as you wish without the need to maintain and upgrade multiple directories.

To set up additional sites using a single directory, simply open the Internet Services Manager and create a new virtual directory using the Virtual Directory Creation Wizard. For example, right-click on the default web site, select New, and then Virtual Directory. In the Virtual Directory Wizard browse to the physical directory that has the files you want to use for the site, e.g., C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\VIWebDev. Once you have created the Virtual directory, right-click on it, select All Tasks, and then select Configure as Visual Intercept Site to load the Visual Intercept tab into the web site properties page. Once you have performed these two simple tasks you are ready to configure you site from the web site’s properties page and begin using it.

You can also configure the web site manually using the viwebconfig.xml. Once you have configured multiple sites to use a particular directory, Visual Intercept will maintain in the web site’s Profiles sub-directory a separate viwebconfig.xml tagged with the name of the website directory. The Profiles directory will also contain a sub-directory which stores the user profiles for that site. Most customers set up separate documents, queries, reports, and rules directories for each site.
